According to many Kenneth Arnold started the UFO hype on June 24, 1947. Arnold was flying a plane over the Cascade Mountain of Washington. He saw a flash of light. He looked and saw “a chain of nine peculiar looking aircraft.” He reported that the objects seemed to be moving at a very high speed. As he looked closer he noticed that they appeared to be crescent-shaped.
When Arnold landed he reported his sighting to the military. However, as always, the press got wind of the story and the phrase “flying saucer” was coined.
Soon after this UFO sightings begin pouring in, and a fad was born. However, many UFOologist dispute this claim and say that aliens were visiting the earth long before 1947.
