I watched this movie out of peer pressure; everyone I knew was talking about how scary Darkness Falls was. Well needless to say, apparently I have easily scared friends.
This movie was actually good as far as the story line and acting goes, but when it comes to being a real thriller, it just isn’t.
The movie opens up with a little history lesson on the town of Darkness Falls and Matilda. Matilda was a very lovely lady, who collected teeth from the children of the town; in exchange for their teeth she gave them a gold coin.
Well fate had something to say about this, as one night Matilda’s house caught fire and she was badly burnt, her face becoming horrified. Afterwards she only went out at night because her skin was very sensitive to light. She also wore a porcelain mask to keep people from seeing her hideous face.
One day two of the local children came up missing and the town blamed Matilda. The hanged her, but before she died she cursed the town, saying what she once took for pleasure she would now take as revenge.
We then go to post modern day, as a boy places his tooth on his dresser. His mom comes in and tucks him in. After a scene with a girl, the boy drifts off to sleep only to be awakened by Matilda after his tooth. Matilda then kills his mother, and the boy is taken off to foster care, being blamed for killing his mother.
Now we go to the modern day. The girl that we saw at the beginning of the movie is back and her little brother has now lost his last baby tooth, so Matilda is after him. And of course we embark on this incredible journey to stop the evil tooth fairy once and for all.
Overall not a bad movie, and if you are at the video store and don’t have anything else in mind, give it a view. However that may be there are several questions that remain unanswered to me, why is the little boy living with his sister to start with? If Matilda is sensitive to light, how can she be out and about during a lightning storm? Why is the story of Matilda in a fairy tale book if it is just a local town legend? What kinds of people name a town Darkness Falls anyway?
Another thing that really bothers me is that this movie seems to take a little something from “The Ring.” You know that movie were you die in seven days after watching it? Well, if you don’t look at Matilda she won’t kill you, but then that opens another question, the little boy’s mother never looked at Matilda, and she was killed anyway!
But this movie is a whole lot better than the movie “They.” You would think a movie from Wes Craven would be original, but “They” was one of the most idiotic movies of the year. No story line (or at least not a very good one), poor acting, no suspense, nothing scary. The only thing about this movie that might make someone want to watch it is that fact that it tells of another world parallel to ours, a world that exists only in the dark. Once again, if you stay in the light “they” can’t get you, seems like a Darkness Falls’ repeat to me.
